Overview
Email sequence triggers control when your automated emails begin sending to a contact. The After Purchase trigger is one of the most popular options, but it does not fire for every product type or enrollment method. This guide explains which product types are supported, which are not, and what you can do instead.
Product Types That Support the Purchase Trigger
The After Purchase trigger fires whenever a customer completes a paid transaction at checkout. It is generally supported for the following product types:
Paid Courses
Premium Memberships
Paid Coaching products
Digital downloads
As soon as payment is successfully processed, the contact enters your email sequence automatically. No manual action is needed on your part.
When the Purchase Trigger Does Not Fire
The After Purchase trigger relies entirely on a completed payment event. It will not typically fire in the following scenarios:
Community products: If community access is not processed as a standard transactional storefront purchase, the trigger never activates. This is the most common source of confusion.
Free member access: No payment is processed, which means no purchase event is recorded.
Complimentary access via 100% off coupon codes: Since no charge occurs, the platform does not register a financial purchase event.
Trial signups: The trigger does not fire at initial trial enrollment. It only fires later when the trial successfully converts to a paid subscription.
If your sequence is not sending and you are using one of these product types or entry methods, the choice of trigger itself is the likely cause, not a bug.
Workarounds for Unsupported Product Types
IIf you need to send automated emails for community products, free tiers, or coupon users where After Purchase won't work, try these alternatives:
Use the At Scheduled Time trigger: Open your email sequence and look for the option to edit your trigger. Instead of an action-based trigger, select At Scheduled Time. This allows you to send the sequence at a scheduled date and time to all users who have access to the selected products, regardless of how they signed up.
Note: Exact button labels and menu options may vary slightly as the WithMe interface is updated.
π‘ Pro Tip: If you frequently run free promotions or use 100% off coupons, consider setting up a dedicated delivery sequence using the At Scheduled Time trigger specifically targeted at that product container so your promotional signups are captured seamlessly.
